When to book a stay in Granada for less

Granada is cheapest in the middle of winter. January is usually the bottom of the market, about 38 percent below the yearly average. October is the priciest, when summer fades, the heat above 35 degrees eases and the city fills with guests in ideal sightseeing weather, and rates rise by around half. The arrival day matters too: Tuesday is the cheapest, Friday the most expensive, as tourists arrive for the weekend. For a regular trip, book about 62 days ahead, and for an Alhambra ticket even earlier, as entries can sell out well in advance.

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The most popular area among guests is Plaza de Toros with Doctores and San Lázaro, close to the centre and well connected, where prices stay moderate. The tourist heart is the centre around the cathedral and the Royal Chapel, usually the priciest. The most atmospheric is the Moorish Albayzín with its narrow lanes and views of the Alhambra, while the cheapest sleep is in the old Jewish quarter of Realejo, where a room runs about 10 percent below the city average. The centre is compact and largely pedestrian, and buses run up to the Alhambra and the hills, so a base further out is still convenient.

• For couples. Romantic rooms in the Albayzín with a view of the Alhambra, and an evening walk to the San Nicolás viewpoint and a flamenco show. Tapas bars are close from there.
• With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for the Alhambra, where entries are timed. Handy with a tight day plan.
• Near the airport. Hotels by Granada airport suit an early flight or a layover. A convenient base when you start or end the trip by plane.
• With a view. Properties in the Albayzín and on the hills look out over the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada. The most such rooms are outside the centre, higher up the slopes.

In winter the Sierra Nevada ski slopes are a short drive away. On those dates rooms in the centre go fastest, so it is worth booking early.
